Some of the Singapore cheap accomodations are located near the Geylang area. Geylang is Singapore's famous red light district so the budget accomodations there can be a little sleazy as some of them rent out room on a two-hours basis and may turn around a room 5 times a day. You may want to check on that before you make any booking.

On the other hand, Geylang is also a place with lots of character and there are many good eateries along the main street Geylang Road. If you ever visit this area, try the popular Lorong 9 Beef Kway Teow (broad noodles).

My family has recently found out you can order the beef Kway Teow from MongKok Dim Sum (214, Geylang Road Lorong 8) which is just across the street from the noodles shop as both shops are under the same management. Mongkok Dim Sum eatery is considerably less crowded compared to Lorong 9 Beef Kway Teow shop so effectively, you can enjoy use the dinning area of Mongkok to enjoy the beef kway Teow from across the road :)
