A visit to Singapore Farms

For Singaporeans who live in concrete jungle, most of them are not aware of the existence of farms in the Lim Chu Kang Area. For Singaporean kids, they rarely have the opportunities to see live farm animals let alone the opportunity to pat them or feed them.

During this school holiday, we decided that we would bring our two kids to the far away land ….Lim Chu Kang. Lim Chu Kang is about 70km from where we live. It is considered far by Singaporean standard.

There are many farms in this area, especially along the Lim Chu Kang Road and Neo Tiew Road. Below is a list of the farms we visited.

Coral Farm - a modern farm, very clean and has a  high tech look. It is one of the leading marine exporters in Singapore specializing in marine fishes, marine invertebrates, corals and “live”rocks. The coral fishes are beautiful and come with a hefty price tag. To give you an idea, a small fish costs $300.
We just walked and looked on our own, the workers basically left us alone as they were busy with their work.

Hausmann Marketing Aquarium - A farm that sell fresh water fishes, edible fishes and fishing baits. They have a large fishing pond presumably allowing keen fisherman to try their luck at a cost. There is also a man-made ‘longkang’ or drain that allows fun loving kids to have go at longkang fishing. $2 for 30 mins fun but you have to release the fishes back after the session. Pay more if you want to take the fish home.

Hay Daires Goat Farm - an official tourism destination. This place is well kept and receive a lot of visitors especially during the weekends. We got to see how the goats are milked, the boys bought a packet of hay at $2 and proceeded to the barn to feed the goats. After the feeding session, we bought fresh goat milk both plain and chocolate flavor to try out. They taste pretty good with no strong smell.

We also visited the Jurong Frog Farm - here we saw many cubicles where the bull frogs were kept. We were told that the time needed to grow the frog to marketable size is about 6 months. The farm also import some to meet the market demand.

Fire Flies Health Farm - A large farm selling organic vegetable supplying to the local organic shops. The time we arrived was late morning and not much vegetables were left. We were told to come earlier next time or call to reserve if we intend to  buy some vegetables.
