Best time to go shopping is during The Great Singapore Sales. You can get huge discount as high as 50-80% during this one month sale period starting from the end of May to the beginning of July. 
For 'intense' Singapore shopping experience, head to the famous Orchard Road which reported to have highest concentration of shops in the world. It is almost synonymous with shopping at 'Fifth Avenue', or the 'Ginza' of Singapore. Here, you can find many designer labels, stylish fashion, books, jewellery, toys, gadgets and more. However, shopping at Orchard Road can be quite a tiring expedition. The way to do it is to take frequent snack and coffee break whenever you feel tired.

Books Borders at Wheellock Place and Parkway Parade, Kinokuniya at Ngee Ann City (Orchard Road) and MPH at Stamford road are good places to shop.
For Chinese Books, school text books and assessment books, visit the Popular bookshops (many branches islandwide). For more text books, Chinese books, arts and craft stuff, Traditional chinese Medicine books, martial arts books, head to Bras Basah Complex.

Flea Markets : Tanglin mall's 2nd Hand Fashion & Jumble Bazaar - With over 50 stalls, this flea market opens 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month (5pm - 11pm) - Far East Square weekend Flea market - Clothes, toys, furniture etc.. Operates on every Saturday and Sunday 10am - 10pm.
China Square Central's Sunday Flea Mart - crafts, toys, accessories and furniture. Every Sunday 9am - 5pm. Address : 18 Cross Street.
Flea Market at Sungei Road - Here, you can find some 2nd hand goods at rock bottom prices.
Souvenirs Souvenirs can be found in many tourist areas. Common souvenirs include the Merlion products, orchids, T-shirts, fridge magnets, handicraft etc..
Singapore Shopping - Tourist Information : A 5% GST (Goods and Service Tax) is levied in singapore (GST will be adjusted to 7% in July 07). As a visitor, you can claim the GST that you paid on your purchases when you take them home. The GST refund form must be validated by Customs at Singapore Changi Airport before your departure by air travel and is not applicable for land and cruise departures. Please check with your retailers if you can claim the tax before confirming your purchase.
